U.S. State Department Travel Advisories & Resources
Consult the U.S. State Department Resources at travel.state.gov for advice on travel. Travel advisories provide safety updates and travel guidance by country. There are four advisory levels. Based on the advisory level, the U.S. Department of State offers various travel advisories for specific areas, covering crime, health, and personal safety concerns. Students can travel to Loyola-approved programs in Level 1, Level 2, and select Level 3 destinations.
SMART Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to:
- Receive alerts from your local U.S. embassy or consulate
- Stay informed of local emergencies, unrest, or disruptions
- Make it easier for the embassy to assist you if an evacuation is needed

Your host university or program provider is an essential source of location-specific guidance. Be sure to review:
- Arrival instructions and orientation materials
- Local emergency contacts and procedures
- Health and safety guidance specific to your host city or region
- University or provider-specific insurance coverage and claims processes
- Cultural adjustment and identity resources tailored to your program location
This information is usually provided before departure or during orientation. If you don’t receive it, reach out to your program coordinator directly.
Alert Traveler
Alert Traveler is a mobile safety app that helps students stay informed about local risks by sending them real-time alerts based on their travel plans. Features include:
- Notifications based on itinerary record/location of study
- Option for location services to be enabled for crisis alerts
- Check-in features
- Ability to follow additional countries travel notifications

CISI Insurance
CISI medical insurance is an international health and travel insurance plan required for all Loyola study abroad students. It provides medical coverage, emergency assistance, and support services while abroad.
- Covers the duration of your program, with an option to extend for independent travel at your own expense
- Students receive an insurance ID card, a policy brochure, and a claim form for use if medical treatment is needed
- Network of medical/health providers that accept either direct billing with CISI or have a pay and claim arrangement with CISI.
- Up to three behavioral telehealth appointments available per participant

University International Travel Safety Policy
Loyola’s International Travel Safety Policy outlines requirements and best practices for safe and compliant travel abroad when participating in university-related travel (e.g., business travel, study abroad, research, service programs, conferences, and athletics).
- Applies to all students, faculty, and staff participating in university travel
- Does not apply to personal travel or travel unrelated to Loyola employment or enrollment
